Cyprus

Cyprus is one of the softest landings in Europe for internationals: an EU island where English is spoken almost universally (a legacy of the British era), the sun shines for most of the year, and a large, well-established expat community makes settling in easy.

It combines a relaxed Mediterranean island lifestyle with a surprisingly international business scene — and an attractive tax regime — which has drawn a steady stream of professionals to Limassol, Larnaca and Nicosia.

Cyprus is a significant hub for forex/fintech, iGaming, shipping and multilingual customer support — sectors that actively recruit European-language speakers and frequently offer relocation packages. Limassol is the corporate heart; Larnaca adds shipping, aviation and services.

English is the default business language across the island, so most international roles do not require Greek.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can live and work freely; you register with the Civil Registry and Migration Department for a Registration Certificate — the so-called "yellow slip" (MEU1) — and obtain a tax number and social-insurance number.

Non-EU citizens need an employer-sponsored work permit arranged in advance. Note that Cyprus is in the EU but not (yet) in the Schengen area.

Cyprus is moderately priced — cheaper than Western Europe, with Limassol the most expensive city and Larnaca and Nicosia better value. A comfortable lifestyle typically costs €1,300–2,200/month including rent.

Most residents run a car or scooter as island public transport is limited; air conditioning makes summer electricity bills the main variable cost.

Cypriot life is warm, hospitable and centred on family, food and the sea. The pace is relaxed even by Mediterranean standards, the meze tradition is a way of life, and the beach is part of the daily routine for much of the year.

With English spoken everywhere and a large, settled international community, day-to-day life feels easy from the start. Winters are short and mild; summers long and hot.

After your yellow slip, register for a tax number and social insurance, which gives access to the GeSY national health system. Open a bank account (Bank of Cyprus, Hellenic Bank — or Revolut to start) and get a SIM (Cyta, Epic, PrimeTel). Remember Cyprus drives on the left.
